EDCI/513 Primary Foundations of Learning Design and Technology

Conversation with a Professional

Sub-Competency 6 (6SC1): Identifies and participates in communities of practice within the field of Educational Technology

With writing the Conversation with a Professional PowerPoint presentation, I have demonstrated that I identified and participated in communities of practice within the field of Educational Technology. I worked in a group with Teresa Carr and David Rose. One group member, Ms. Carr, knew someone who is the Director of Online Learning at a University that we could interview. We interviewed Wendy Porter, who is the Director of Online Development, from the LDS Business College in Utah. In preparation for the Conversation with a Professional, we prepared an outline detailing the information required for the interview. The interview was conducted using WebEx; our group member took turns interviewing Ms. Porter.

Ms. Porter shared with us her typical work day, the skills needed, the technology tools she uses, her biggest challenge, and offered advice to new Instructional Design professionals. She suggested creating a portfolio demonstrating our work experience, highlighting our involvement in the project. Ms. Porter mentioned the skills or attributes Instructional Designers need such as being proactive and engage with colleagues, peers, and superiors with intelligence.

I experienced through the interview with Ms. Porter what to expect as a successful Instructional Designer. I learned from the conversation with Ms. Porter that I need a portfolio, to expect to attend many meetings, to be knowledgeable with a variety of technologies, and to expect challenges. I will continue to learn and grow as an Instructional designer by attending webinars, conferences, workshops, to stay current with industry standards.
